Championship club Cardiff City have added American striker Eddie Johnson to their ranks after he completed a season long loan deal from Fulham.
Eddie Johnson signed for Premier League club Fulham from Kansas City Wizards in January. He might have been playing Championship football with the Cottagers, had they not made a remarkable recovery at the end of last season. While Fulham remain in the top flight, though, Johnson is dropping down a division in order to gain some first team football.
Johnson was highly rated in the MLS and was a regular scorer. However, he has struggled for form at Craven Cottage, failing to find the back of the net. After seeing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Robbie Fowler depart over the summer, the capture of Johnson has pleased Bluebirds boss Dave Jones, who said: “Hopefully we've picked up another good player that will come in and help the cause.”
Glenn Loovens recently left Ninian Park for Celtic and Roger Johnson could soon depart, too. Reports in the press suggest that Ipswich Town are ready to make a third bid for the defender, having had an offer of almost £2million turned down recently.
Maximum Volzage
Meanwhile, the Tractor boys have not given up hope of signing Mortiz Volz, also of Fulham. Ipswich boss Jim Magilton told a local newspaper: “We are still very much in the hunt for Moritz although we have something else going on with regards to bringing in another defender.
“Moritz still has a hunger and he feels he is a Premier League defender - so do we - but if we could bring him in we would be delighted.”
Spanish Connection
Town are being linked with a number of players at the moment. Another name that is floating around is Jose Emilio Guerra, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid B. Last season he scored 15 goals in 16 appearances for Barcelona B.
“Certainly Guerra is a very good player and one that I'm still interested in,” stated Magilton.
He went on to explain: “The Spanish market is something that should be explored a lot more. Pablo [Counago] really enjoys playing here, [Ivan] Campo really enjoys playing in England and having two players of that quality means they can pass on the gospel. We have a contact in Valencia and we are on building that.”
One Spaniard who will not be arriving at Portman Road is Cesar Navas. “Unless he has changed his girlfriend, who didn't like the area, we have no chance,” Magilton commented.
