Newcastle swoop for Deportivo's £5.7m striker Xisco
Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Francisco "Xisco" Jimenez Tejada from Deportivo La Coruña. The young striker arrives at St. James' Park on a five-season deal.
The Magpies confirmed their final summer acquisition on their official website. The following statement was published:
"NEWCASTLE United have completed the signing of Spain under-21 striker Francisco 'Xisco' Jimenez Tejada.
"The 22-year-old has penned a five-year deal at St.James' Park and joins from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna.
"Xisco, who will wear the No.19 shirt, joins former Depor team-mate Fabricio Coloccini on Tyneside after the Argentine became the most expensive defender in the club's history last month."
Xisco, 22 years of age, made his Liga debut for Depor in the 2004-05 season, managing two goals in four starts and three substitute appearances.
The following season he was only able to net once, prompting a loan to minnows UD Vecindario for the 2006-07 season. Although the Canary Islanders were to be relegated from the Segunda División, he nonetheless hit a double-figure tally.
Last season he returned to A Coruña and struck 9 times in 25 Liga matches, helping to propel 'SuperDepor' to the Intertoto Cup.
Now the Spanish U-21 international joins up with Kevin Keegan's side as they seek to mount a European challenge of their own.
