Newcastle deny manager Kevin Keegan has been sacked - 'Kevin is extremely important, both now and in the future'
Kevin Keegan looks set to remain as manager of Newcastle United despite reports throughout today suggesting that the former England boss had been sacked from his role at the club.
After a day of speculation, the North East club have released a statement on their official website confirming that Keegan remains at the managerial helm for the Magpies and has not been sacked.
“Newcastle United can confirm that meetings between members of the Board and manager Kevin Keegan were held both yesterday and today. Kevin has raised a number of issues and those have been discussed with him,” read the statement.
“The Club wants to keep progressing with its long-term strategy and would like to stress that Kevin is extremely important, both now and in the future,” it continued.
“Newcastle United values the effort and commitment shown by Kevin since his return to St. James' Park and wants him to continue to play an instrumental role as manager of the Club.
“For the avoidance of doubt the Club has not sacked Kevin Keegan as manager.”
Betting on the next Premier League manager to be sacked was suspended this morning after an avalanche of money was placed on Keegan, who is reportedly extremely unhappy at the lack of new faces brought in and the sale of winger James Milner to Aston Villa.
All of the major news outlets had reported that the former Manchester City manager had left his post and fans had been protesting outside St. James’ Park throughout this afternoon.
It remains to be seen whether or not club owner Mike Ashley had a change of heart after witnessing the outcry from supporters who believed that Keegan had gone.
