Striker keen not to be regularly likened to brother

Just 18 miles separate John Rooney from his brother Wayne, but their worlds couldn't be further apart.

John, 17, has just signed professional terms with League Two side Macclesfield Town and will earn £150 a week. Wayne, on the other hand, pockets £110,000 a week at Manchester United, and pulls in millions more in sponsorship.

Wayne made his Everton debut at the age of 16, but John has so far managed just two first-team appearances.

When he can, Wayne travels from his mansion in the affluent suburb of Prestbury to watch John, who still lives with his parents on Merseyside, play at nearby Macclesfield.

Macclesfield youth team manager John Askey believes John is making good progress, but stopped short of suggesting he will go on to emulate the achievements of his famous brother.

"John has come on leaps and bounds in the last year," Askey told the Sun.

"He is still by no means a finished product, but if he continues to progress the way he has done, he will score goals.

"For his age he is very strong and he's now got the chance to work and train with the first team and hopefully show what he can do."
