Luiz Felipe Scolari second visit to Malaysia
New Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari hopes Kuala Lumpur would turn out to be a lucky charm for him again.
Scolari had led the Brazil national team to the capital for a warm-up match in 2002 and they went on to win the World Cup which was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan that year.
The Brazilian said at a packed press conference that he had initially said he that would never return to Kuala Lumpur because of the long travelling distance but is now back with Chelsea six years later.
“I have learnt ... you should never say never. We were in Kuala Lumpur for seven days, then. We played one game with the Malaysian team,” said Scolari.
On a serious note, Scolari said Chelsea was slowly gaining momentum in their build-up to the new season.
He said the Asian Tour, which includes the match against the Malaysian Selection at the Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow, was a form of match-training for the team before they braced themselves for their first big test against top Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow on Aug 3.
“The two or three games here are basically match-training for the players before the real test begins in Moscow,” added Scolari.
“ I still need about 15 days more or less to have a clear picture of my team.”
Chelsea began their eight-day Asia tour by defeating Guangzhou 4-0 and Chengdu Blades 7-0.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's national coach B. Sathianathan acknowledged that they would be up against a football giant but felt that his boys would be able to put up a strong performance in front of the home fans.
“We will not make it easy for Chelsea. Hopefully, the boys play to instructions and hold the ball well and don’t lose possession,” said Sathianathan.
Malaysia last played Chelsea in Kuala Lumpur at the FAPL Asia Cup, which they lost 1-4.
