Sevilla have signed France defender Sebastien Squillaci from Lyon on a four-year contract.

Lyon defender Sebastien Squillaci has signed for Spanish side Sevilla, the French club have confirmed.

According to Sky Sports, Squillaci is currently in Spain having a medical prior to completing the transfer.

The move will see the French international leave Lyon after signing from Monaco in 2006. He quickly established himself at the club and has been a rock in the heart of the French side’s defence alongside Brazilian Cris.

The defender has also enjoyed modest success on the international front. He has 12 caps to his name and was part of Raymond Domenech’s French squad at Euro 2008. Yet despite his impressive domestic form he was unable to dislodge Gallas and Thuram as the first choice centre back pairing at Euro 2008 and spent the tournament watching from the sidelines as the French crashed out of the tournament at the group stages.

The centre back has enjoyed a successful spell in Lyon, winning two league titles and a French Cup with the club and helping them dominate the French league. However, Squillaci now looks to be heading for a new challenge as he swaps France for Spain.

Sevilla finished last season fifth in La Liga, level on points with Atletico Madrid, but behind Real Madrid, Villareal and Barcelona. They have already dipped into the transfer market this summer and Squillaci will join fellow new recruits Lautaro Acosta, Abdoulay Konko, Romaric, and Fernando Navarro in Andalucia.
