Middlesbrough ready to sell Downing to Spurs for £15m - but only if they get Bale in return
Tottenham have long admired 24-year-old Downing and White Hart Lane boss Harry Redknapp is keen to strengthen his options on the left wing.
Tottenham Hotpsur are finally set to offer 15 million pounds to acquire the services of Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing, according to a report in the British tabloid the Daily Mirror.
Spurs have been continuously linked with the England international but have been reluctant to meet Boro’s demands for a big transfer fee.
However, with Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp especially keen to fill the void on the left side of midfield, the north London outfit are ready to meet Middlesbrough’s valuation.
Apparently, the two clubs have been in negotiations since November when Spurs allegedly made an 11 million pound offer, although Boro manager Gareth Southgate recently insisted nobody had inquired about the availability of his players.
It is thought that Middlesbrough will accept a bid in the region of 15 million pounds for Downing, as they have Adam Johnson as a ready-made replacement on the left side of midfield.
Southgate is also hoping to bring Crystal Palace midfielder Ben Watson to the Riverside Stadium for 1.5 million pounds, but has been told he needs to raise funds in order to do so.
