While doubt lingers over the future of United's Argie star, boss Fergie has revealed that discussions over a permanent deal are already well underway....
Anyone who has been keeping half an eye on the Manchester United news reel over the past month or so will know all about the unfolding saga surrounding Carlos Tevez.
Argentina’s No. 11 has found himself stranded on the fringes at Old Trafford since Dimitar Berbatov joined from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the summer.
Furthermore, United’s decision not to wrap up a permanent deal during the off-season – Tevez is currently on loan from Media Sports Investment (MSI) – and instead spend over £30 million on Berbatov has raised serious questions as to the 24-year-old’s long-term prospects in Manchester.
The former West Ham United player has been strongly linked to Inter Milan and Real Madrid, but Sir Alex Ferguson claimed last night that the wheels were already in motion regarding a permanent contract.
"It's not as if we've been short on negotiations, there have been plenty of negotiations and I think that we all know that sometimes it can take a long time," the United boss said in the Daily Mail.
"David Gill, our chief executive, has been talking to his agent and therefore it's best left with David because he's good at that.
"We're used to this over the years and we're all used to it. You just have to be patient."
Apart from Berbatov, Tevez is also competing with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney for a starting spot he no doubt thought he had secured with his excellent displays last term.
It is not as though the ex-Corinthians man has been disappointing this season, either. He scored four times in the Red Devils’ Carling Cup win over Blackburn Rovers, and netted again last night as they drew with Aalborg in the Champions League.
And Ferguson insisted that Tevez has been more prominent in this campaign so far than most pundits have acknowledged.
"It's not difficult because when you have a squad of players, everyone gets their share of games and the important thing is that Carlos has made a great contribution," claimed the Scot.
"He's started a few games. We're halfway through the season and by the end of the season, you'll see how many games he's actually participated in and I think that contribution he's making at the moment has been very important to us. There isn't one player that's played all the games.
"They've all had minutes on the clock and some of them have spent time on the bench and some of them haven't been involved at all in various games and that's exactly what happens these days with the modern use of squad rotation."
MSI are thought to be demanding around £34 million for Tevez.
