Cannavaro will stay in Madrid Till Retire
Despite recent speculation linking the Azzurri captain back to Italy, the player himself has confirmed that he wants to remain in Madrid for the time being.
Fabio Cannavaro signed with Real Madrid from Juventus, following the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Italian football in 2006.
He has been a welcomed addition to the star studded Madrid line-up in the past, but has struggled to find his feet this season, and as a result, it has been rumoured that he will return to Italy in the near future.
The World Champion publically denied this earlier tonight however, as he has confirmed in an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS that, “I like it in Madrid and I want to stay here".
It may come as a shock to some, however it is clear that the club’s central defender wants to stay in Madrid and honour his contract which expires in June 2009.
When asked about a renewal, Cannavaro went on to say: “This is not the ideal time to talk about renewal, as it will not benefit the team in any way.
“First comes the team, then the individual, and when we have made a decision, we will inform the public.
“I will meet with the club’s technical staff to discuss a renewal when the time is right, however I have already stated many times that I intend to remain here and that Real Madrid is my first choice,” he concluded.
The captain of the Azzurri was finally asked about the club’s upcoming Champions League tie against Liverpool, with the first leg taking place in February next year.
“Our Champions League matches against Liverpool will be very difficult.
“It will be wonderful to play at Anfield however, as I have good memories playing there three years ago with Juventus, even if we lost 2-1,” he concluded.
Los Blancos will get their 2009 under way with a tough home match against Villarreal on January 4.
