Berg inspires Groningen to rout
Harm van Veldhoven’s unbeaten run at the helm of Roda JC came to an end as Marcus Berg enjoyed a big gamein a 5-2 rout at the hands of FC Groningen in the Eredivisie.
After guiding Roda to three games without defeat since his appointment as coach, Van Veldhoven came crashing down to earth as Berg struck four times to hand Groningen three points that lift Ron Jans’ troops to sixth place.
Swedish striker Berg bagged his first goal of the night after just three minutes but an Andreas Granqvist own goal ensured the sides went in at the break on level terms.
The second period belonged to Berg, however, the 22-year-old bagging three goals in just 10 minutes - two of them penalties - as the visitors raced into a 4-1 lead by the hour-mark.
Jeanvion Matondo pulled one back for Roda after 73 minutes but Oluwafemi Ajilore restored Groningen’s three-goal cushion with a killer fifth three minutes from full-time.
The win arrested a four-game losing streak for Groningen, while defeat for Roda leaves them perilously close to the relegation zone, two points clear of third-bottom De Graafschap who have a game in hand.
Heerenveen’s European woes crossed over into their domestic campaign as they went down 4-1 to Sparta Rotterdam.
The teams went in at half-time with the scoreline blank, but five goals after the break made for an enthralling encounter at Sparta Stadion.
Erik Falkenburg grabbed the opening goal for the hosts after 51 minutes but that was cancelled out two minutes later when Gerald Sibon levelled for Heerenveen, who this week bowed out of the UEFA Cup after failing to win any of their group-stage matches.
Heerenveen coach Trond Sollied’s gloom deepened after 57 minutes when Arne Slot restored Sparta’s lead, while Rydell Poepon made it 3-1 midway through the half.
Yuri Rose’s 85th-minute goal clinched the win for Sparta, who have now scored four goals in each of their last three home games in the Eredivisie.
NAC Breda scored twice in two second-half minutes to take the points against Vitesse Arnhem who finished the game with 10 men.
Goals by Jonas Kolkka and Anthony Lurling separated the two sides as the visitors struggled to create chances.
Vitesse striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel saw red when he picked up his second yellow card after 52 minutes.
