Everton pay club record £15m for Fellaini of Liège
Everton have obliterated their transfer record with the signing of Marouane Fellaini from Standard Liege...
Everton announced via their official website that Fellaini will join the club in a deal worth over £15million - a fee which comfortably eclipses Yakubu's £12million move from Middlesbrough last summer.
The 20-year-old, who is of Moroccan descent, has long been touted as one of Belgium's best prospects, winning both the Golden Ball and the Ebony Shoe in the Jupiler League last season.
The versatile midfielder attracted strong interest over the last month with his impressive performances at the Olympics and his efforts against Liverpool in Liege's third-round Champions League qualifier.
Fellaini penned a five-year deal with the Toffees yesterday, capping the remarkable transformation from what only a week ago appeared to be a horrendous summer at Goodison Park.
"This is fantastic news for everyone connected with the Club. We have signed one of European football’s most exciting prospects who will have a huge part to play at Everton over the next five years," said Everton chief executive Robert Elstone.
"I spoke with (chairman) Bill Kenwright and (manager) David Moyes shortly after concluding the deal and they are delighted we have managed to secure his services.
"It came late on, like a lot of the big deals in the Premier League, but he’s with us and we look forward to welcoming him to Goodison."
