Russia 1-1 Netherlands

The Netherlands were unable to avenge their Euro 2008 defeat by Russia. Having taken the lead through Robin van Persie, they were held in an entertaining match which saw Konstantin Zyryanov equalise with a late penalty kick.

Dutch boss Bert van Marwijk made five changes from the recent Euro 2008 quarter-final against the Russians. Stekelenburg, Heitinga, Van Bommel, Robben and Huntelaar came in for Van der Sar, Boulahrouz, Engelaar, Sneijder and Van Nistelrooy in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

For Russia, Guus Hiddink made just three changes to the team that lined up against Spain at the semi-final stage of the Austria and Switzerland showpiece. Berezutski, Anyukov and Saenko were replaced by Kolodin, Yanbaev and Bystrov.

First Half

The Netherlands started the brighter side of the sides, but the first real chance of the match fell to the Russians. A run down the flank eventually resulted in a pass to Igor Semshov, who shot wide of the Dutch goal.

A Rafael van der Vaart free kick caused trouble for Russia in the 25th minute and saw Oranje take the lead. Mathijsen set up Robin van Persie after a scrimmage in the box and the Arsenal player curled the ball beautifully past Akinfeev.

Van der Vaart tried to chip the Russian goalie as the visitors continued to dominate, but Akinfeev saved his attempt at the cost of a corner-kick. Van Persie came close to scoring his second goal of the match from the corner, but saw his header miraculously saved by the Russian goalie.

Russia had trouble creating chances, but a quickly taken free kick on the half-hour mark resulted in a chance for Spartak striker Pavlyuchenko. The forward failed to score, though, sending the ball wide of the target.

Second Half

Russia started the second half brilliantly and Zhirkov had a good chance after a fabulous Arshavin pass. However, Stekelenburg showed his class between the sticks and prevented the equaliser.

Holland took the initiative again on the hour mark and Robben had a fabulous chance to double the lead for Netherlands. However, the Real Madrid winger somehow managed to miss after evading the 'keeper.

Van Persie and substitute Vennegoor of Hesselink, who replaced the anonymous Huntelaar, also had chances to extend the lead for their team, but they both failed to add their name to the score sheet.

Then, with less than ten minutes to go, Holland skipper Van Bronkhorst fouled Russian midfielder Torbinskiy in his own box and a penalty was promptly awarded. Zyryanov stepped up and calmly placed the ball past the Dutch goalie.

Holland came close to what would have been a deserved win in the injury time, but Celtic man Vennegoor of Hesselink saw his attempt held by the impressive Akinfeev.
