The organisers of Manchester United’s recent pre-season tour of Nigeria has hit back at the club’s claim that Wayne Rooney picked up a virus during his stay.
The England marksman is set to miss the Red Devil’s league opener against Newcastle United, as well as Sunday’s Charity Shield clash with Portsmouth, due to the virus.
However, organisers of the three match tour, which saw United face Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and then Pompey, claim that the 22-year old picked up the illness after his stay, and not during it as Sir Alex Ferguson and club officials have stated.
“It’s a lie from the pit of hell and it’s sad someone had to go to that length to degrade Nigeria. Rooney only sat in his hotel room. He was in Nigeria for less than 24 hours,” one organiser exclaimed.
Despite the player’s poor condition, he was able to fulfil a film obligation in the city on Thursday, suggesting that he could be in line for a return earlier than first suggested.
