Manchester City have signed Vincent Kompany from Hamburger SV for an undisclosed fee...
Kompany, 22, emerged as a transfer target for the Citizens in the past week and the move has been completed this afternoon, the club have confirmed.
The Belgian international was initially part of the Olympics team that finished fourth after losing to Brazil in the third-place play-off, before being allowed to leave after just one game, in which he was controversially sent off.
The defender, who can also play in defensive midfield and has been mooted to play there for City, has signed a four-year contract at Eastlands, for a fee rumoured to be in the region of €10 million.
The signing will go some way towards appeasing City fans who have grown frustrated with rumours of internal unrest and financial woes surrounding owner Thaksin Shinawatra.
The club are hopeful that Kompany, who has been capped over 20 times for Belgium, can gain international clearance in time to debut this weekend against West Ham United.
