South Korea 1-0 Honduras
South Korea have clinched a 1-0 win over Honduras at Shanghai Stadium on Wednesday. The win however, is not enough to help to Koreans progess from the group stage.
To qualify from their group, the Koreans had to defeat Honduras by more than three goals and Italy needed to beat Cameroon.
Despite putting in their best efforts, Park Sung Wha’s charges will be disappointed not to have scored more goals against Honduras.
Playmaker Kim Dong-jin struck the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute, after midfielder Lee Keun-ho threaded a pinpoint pass to the Zenit St Petersburg player.
Honduras coach Yearwood Gilberto opted for a 5-3-2 formation and Honduras dominated in the opening minutes.
Kim’s goal however, turned the tide for the Koreans as they created several attacking opportunities in which three were ruled offside.
Honduras had an opportunity to take lead in the 13th-minute, when Luis Lopez pulled away from a defender after playmaker Ramon Nunez and Emil Martinez created space for him. Lopez however, could only fire his shot too high.
The goalscorer, Kim, could have turned villain when he missed the ball and allowed Martinez to intercept it. The midfielder had plenty of space to shoot but could only unleash his effort into the hands at Korean keeper Jung Sung-ryong.
Korea nearly doubled their advantage a minute after the restart, when Cho Young-cheoi broke free down the left. However, Cho blasted the ball across the goal.
The Yokohama FC midfielder nearly had another opportunity to find the net on 78 minutes. His effort from 20 metres was tipped over the crossbar by Honduras keepr Obed Enamorado.
With Italy and Cameroon playing out to a goalless draw, Korea’s victory over the Honduras was a little more than a consolation in the end.
