Vincent Kompany failed to return to Hamburg after allegedly missing his flight.
Kompany fails to return as ordered
Vincent Kompany has risked the wrath of his club by refusing to return to Hamburg despite their insistence that he returns from the Olympics immediately.
The Belgian defender already was the centre of controversy before the Olympics began when he flew to Beijing despite being denied permission by his club to particpate. Then, an agreement was reportedly reached that he would return after his country's second game, but now he is marching to his own drummer again."Kompany unilaterally and on his own initiative decided to stay with the Belgian team at the Olympics, and this against the will of his club," said a statement released by the Belgian national team.
The news is sure to infuriate HSV boss Martin Jol, who just on Sunday announced: "We have an agreement with the Belgian FA that we can have him back after their second game. Our squad is not strong enough at the moment that we can do without him."
The repercussions of this for the 22-year-old remain to be seen, but it looks almost certain that he will be missing the season opener against Bayern Munich this weekend.
His country have hardly received the full benefit of his presence yet in any case, as Kompany was sent off during the opening 0-1 defeat against Brazil and was forced to sit out the second match against China.
