Charges of racism taint Zenit's arrival on big stage

The shine on Zenit St. Petersburg's UEFA Cup trophy win of 2007 has been dulled after UEFA hit the Russian club with a €37,000 for racism...

European football's governing body in Nyon has formally announced that the €37,000 (1.38m Russian rubles) is payable due to the action of some supporters during Zenit's home match with Marseille.

"Our disciplinary committee fined Zenit for racist conduct by their fans, the use of pyrotechnics and the display of a political banner during their match against Marseille," said a spokesman today.

The home encounter with Marseille, which ended 2-0 in favour of the Russian champions, was marred by racist incidents. Anecdotal evidence suggests that white hoods were worn by at least one fan, a stuffed monkey was waved, and a banner reading "There is no room for white in the colours of Marseille" displayed by a section of the home support.

Zenit have three days in which to appeal the decision.
