Surprise loss for MyTeam
UPB-MyTeam failed to secure their place in the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals after going down to a surprise 1-2 loss to Johor Pasir Gudang in a Group C match at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya last night.
Otelo Ocampos (72nd) and Faizal Abdullah (76th) were on target for Johor PG while Nazrin Nawi replied for the home side in the second-half stoppage time.With three matches to go, MyTeam’s first loss in the competition allowed both Perlis and Perak to close the gap on them to five and six points respectively.
Perlis beat Pahang 4-1 while Perak also scored a convincing 5-1 victory over bottom-placed Armed Forces.
Pahang, who were second just a week ago, dropped to fifth spot after being overtaken by Johor PG.
A first half hat-trick by Michael Barasa made sure that Police remained on top of Group B after overwhelming 10-man Penang 3-1 at the City Stadium.
The Kenyan midfielder opened the scoring for the cops after 16 minutes before adding another two goals in the 37th and 45th minutes.
Penang managed to pull a goal back through M. Prakash from penalty spot in the 62nd minute.
The Panthers’ bid to get back into the game was thwarted when they were reduced to 10 men after A. Jaganathan was sent off for a second bookable offence five minutes from time.
Johor FC kept pace with the cops at the top of Group B with a 3-1 home win over Sabah at the Larkin Stadium.
Mohd Nurul Azwan and Azuwad Arip gave the home side a 2-0 lead at half-time before Bobby Gonzales reduced the deficit for Sabah with nine minutes remaining. But Saiful Sabtu restored Johor FC’s two-goal lead in injury time.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Nurul and Sabah’s Ahmad Tarmini Saiban received their marching orders for fighting.
Police and Johor FC both have 14 points, two ahead of champions Kedah.
The Canaries leapfrogged over Kuala Lumpur into third place in the group after defeating the latter 4-1 at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras.
The contest in Group A was thrown wide open after the top two teams – Kelantan and Negri Sembilan – suffered home defeats.
Zairo Anuar Zalani’s 35th minute strike was enough for Terengganu to clinch a hard earned 1-0 victory over Kelantan in Kota Baru while Negri were humbled 1-2 by Selangor in Paroi.
Kelantan still lead the standings on 14 points, but have Terengganu, Negri and Selangor – all on 13 points – breathing down their neck.
