Brazilian footballing great Pele has spoken in critical terms of Wayne Rooney, though stressed that he remains a big admirer of the Manchester United and England star.
Speaking after United's disappointing 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs, during which Rooney only stood out for his infamous short fuse, the Brazilian legend said that the man that England fans affectionately dubbed the 'White Pele' has largely flattered to deceive since his international coming out party in Holland and Belgium.
"I like Wayne Rooney, but he hasn't reached the peak of Euro 2004," said Pele. "He had two or three very good years but then he lost a little bit from his performances. I don't know why.
"When he is tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself - not attack the opponent. If you can protect yourself against challenges, it will be easier to keep your temper."
Rooney has already vowed to be more goal-driven this season after having found himself firmly in Cristiano Ronaldo's shadows for the almost entirety of last campaign.
To his credit, however, never showed a hint of resentment and contributed greatly to United's double last season with plenty of hard work and assists.
The next date on United’s South African tour will see them face the Orlando Pirates on July 22.
