Cudicini resigned to the fact that he will always be No. 2
Thirty-five-year-old Italian goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has come to terms with playing second fiddle to Petr Cech in the star-studded Chelsea team.
Cudicini believes he still has a vital role to play in the team under new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.
“I know my position in Chelsea ... Cech is number one,” said Cudicini, who has featured in more than 200 matches with Chelsea since arriving from Italian Division Two club Castel di Sangro in 1999.
Cudicini was the No. 1 goalkeeper under previous manager Claudio Ranieri.
But when Jose Mourinho took over in 2004, Cudicini’s fortunes took a tumble and Cech became the first choice goalkeeper.
With Cech having kept 90 clean sheets in 166 appearances since arriving in 2004, Cudicini knows he’s set to be the second choice goalkeeper in the new season.
Last season, Chelsea finished second in both the English Premier League and the Champions League (losing to Manchester United in the final) and Cudicini featured in 20 matches.
He described it as “not a bad outing for a second choice goalkeeper”.
“My personal target this season for sure is to play in more matches,” said Cudicini.
“Chelsea are my second family and I have another year left of my contract with the club. Then, I will see what happens next.”
As for the new EPL season, Cudicini expects the top four of Manchester United, Chelsea Arsenal and Liverpool to be the main contenders for honours again.
