Arshavin: Praying for move
Arshavin prays for Gunners move
Recent speculation now links Andrei Arshavin with Arsenal, with his agent insisting the Zenit star is "desperate" to join Arsene Wenger's side...
Andrei Arshavin's agent continues to angle his client towards Europe's big guns - namely Arsenal - with the Emirates apparently now his preferred destination.
The Russian Euro 2008 star looked set for Barcelona after admitting that he has long desired a move to the Camp Nou, but the Catalan giants have underestimated Zenit St Petersburg's resolve.
Indeed, Barca's bid reportedly failed to interest the Uefa Cup winners' board and agent Dennis Lachter is working overtime to make sure his client ends up at a top club come the end of the summer.
He has claimed that an English club have offered £19m for the creative forward - much closer to Zenit's £24m valuation of the 27-year-old.
Now, talking about Arshavin's potential destination, Lachter told the Daily Mirror: "Andrei is desperate to join Arsenal.
"His style of play would suit them perfectly."
Though his muted performance in that loss to eventual winners Spain has dampened the hype surrounding him, murmurs of interest are ongoing with Barcelona, his favourite club, having already made an offer of £12 million, thought to be £10 or so short of what the Russian club want for their star man.
With the Blaugrana seemingly unrelenting in their stance, the floor is open to other clubs to swoop for the 27-year-old, who wishes to leave his hometown club despite Champions League football in the offing next season and a hefty salary received from the club, purely for footballing reasons to test his skills in one of Europe's major leagues.
The player himself initially expressed a fondness for La Liga, but with Barcelona doing their utmost to rule themselves out and Real Madrid very much focused on one player and one player only, his future may have to lie elsewhere. Also, considering no big club in Italy currently in search of his type of player, England looks the most likely destination.
Arsenal and Chelsea were both linked with a move for the player, but the club have firmly denied any contact from anyone except Barcelona - so far. Whether Roman Abramovich will wish to bring a compatriot to Stamford Bridge or Arsene Wenger is pressured into making a signing of proven quality to appease Gunners fans remains to be seen.
The player's agent has opened up the possibility of a move to the Premier League, but insists that nothing outside the Big Four will do, with Arshavin only willing to leave his hometown club for guaranteed first team football.
"Andrei would like to play in the Premier League but he will not accept an offer from clubs like Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa," Lachter is quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph.
"There are only four British clubs he would play for and they are in the Champions League. It's not about money, it's about a team and professional ambition.
"Zenit is negotiating with several clubs. We are now waiting for a phone call from Zenit president Alexander Dyukov to allow us to negotiate his personal terms with one of them. It's most likely he will be heading for England.
"It's going to be a very big transfer. Zenit will definitely not accept an offer of less than €30 million (£23.8m).
"They are owned by Gazprom, who are one of the biggest oil companies in the world, so they can afford not to sell him cheaply."
However, the valuation set by Zenit on Arshavin, who is eager for a new challenge after eight years at the club, skyrocketed after these games, which has made several clubs give up on their pursuit of the 27-year-old.
It was reported yesterday that Barcelona had decided to not follow their interest in Arshavin after having their €15 million offer rejected by Zenit.
Arshavin acknowledges that the €25 million price tag set by his employers will make it very hard for him to complete a summer move.
"Football has weird things. The fact that I played well at Euro 2008 ended up harming me because it raised my price," he told Sport Express.
"I understand Zenit's stance because my value was in fact very low."

Agent On Arshavin: Big Four Or Nothing
Dennis Lachter, agent of Zenit St Petersburg's wanted star Andrei Arshavin, has revealed his client would only consider a move to England for one of the big four, a stance that is not motivated by money.
The forward has exploded onto the scene this year with a match-winning performance in the UEFA Cup final for his club and scintillating displays for his country that saw them reach the semi-final of Euro 2008.Though his muted performance in that loss to eventual winners Spain has dampened the hype surrounding him, murmurs of interest are ongoing with Barcelona, his favourite club, having already made an offer of £12 million, thought to be £10 or so short of what the Russian club want for their star man.

Arshavin Regrets Euro Form
Zenit Saint Petersburg star Andrei Arshavin has surprisingly conceded that his Euro 2008 performances have put in jeopardy a move to one of Europe's big names.
The Russian star has been on the radar of La Liga and Premier League clubs following his topnotch displays against Sweden and the Netherlands at Euro 2008.However, the valuation set by Zenit on Arshavin, who is eager for a new challenge after eight years at the club, skyrocketed after these games, which has made several clubs give up on their pursuit of the 27-year-old.
