Will Ferrell becoming owner of Los Angeles FC! We've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story: Will Ferrell becomes part owner of Los Angeles Football Club! “This is not a joke”: "Kicking and Screaming" star Will Ferrell is part owner of the Los Angeles Football Club, a Major League Soccer expansion franchise kicking off in 2018.

Hollywood superstar and comedian Will Ferrell unveiled Los Angeles’ newest professional sports team on Thursday, pulling back the curtain on LAFC, a Major League Soccer expansion franchise which will kickoff in 2018.

“I’ve never been a part owner of anything,” quipped Ferrell at the club’s official press conference. “Though I am still part-owner of an ’84 Toyota Camry with my brother.”

“This is not a joke,” Ferrell told a crowd of baying LAFC supporters at Union Station on Thursday.

“I grew up playing soccer on the mean streets of Irvine, California starting when I was eight years old. I continue to play club soccer, our three boys all play soccer, my wife played soccer at Pomona. To say that soccer is a big part of our lives is an understatement, and I’m proud to be a member of this wonderful ownership group.”

Ferrell comes by his love of the sport honestly. His wife, Vivica Paulin, was in fact an All-SCIAC player at Pomona, albeit on the second team, in 1988.

Ferrell joins a list of glittering stars behind LA’s new gold and black crest that include Mia Hamm, Nomar Garciaparra and Magic Johnson. LAFC is operated by venture capitalist Henry Nguyen, and is in the process of breaking ground on a proposed 25,000-seat stadium.
