Real Madrid C.F.'s Karim Benzema has been arrested by French police in relation to the alleged plot to blackmail Lyon playmaker Mathieu Valbuena, according to reports. Former Liverpool FC striker Djibril Cisse was among four people taken into custody as part of the investigation last month.

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema arrested over alleged blackmail

Karim Benzema has been arrested by French police in connection with alleged blackmail relating to a sex tape featuring national team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, according to AFP.

The French media agency reported the Real Madrid striker arrived at a police station near Paris early on Wednesday and was placed in detention.

An investigation was opened in July into a suspected attempt to extort France international Valbuena, with police trying to determine the extent to which Benzema was aware of an intimate video which found its way into the hands of blackmailers.

AFP report that Benzema mentioned the tape to Valbuena during a meeting of the French team in early October, but it is unclear whether he was teasing or trying to make him pay the blackmailers.

Valbuena, 31, currently plays for Lyon and was in the same France squad as Benzema at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
