Freddy Adu, once dubbed the 'new Pele', is doing nightclub promotion work after being released

The American striker, who signed a million-dollar endorsement deal with Nike at the age of 13, was once dubbed the 'new Pele' and considered to be the hottest prospect in American soccer.

Freddy Adu's career has taken a downward spiral after it was revealed that he has turned to nightclub promotion work in Washington DC.

The American striker, who signed a million-dollar endorsement deal with Nike at the age of 13, was once dubbed the 'new Pele' and considered to be the hottest prospect in football.

However, a series of dismal loan spells in Europe - most recently with Serbian side Jagodina - has seen Adu left without a club and forced to try his hand at something completely different.

Now 25, Adu's floundering career went from bad to worse after a failed trial at troubled Championship side Blackpool last year where caretaker manager Barry Ferguson opted not to offer him a permanent contract.

Since being released from his deal Adu seems to be making ends meet rustling up business for a nightclub - no shame in that, of course, but it remains a sad comedown for a young star who once threatened to outshine all the others in the game.

After the picture went viral the man himself went on to social media to draw a distinction between being a nightclub promoter, and being paid to host a nightclub evening.

He also insisted that he has not yet given up on football and still hopes to find a new club.

But with 10 false starts already on his footballing CV, it seems very unlikely that will ever happen.

Football is full of fairytales of kids from humble backgrounds making it big - but the beautiful game also has more than its fair share of cautionary tales. And Adu's tale looks like going down in history as one of the saddest of the lot.
