Mud bath: Blackpool's Bloomfield Road surface would be fit for Sunday league football

Professional football or Sunday league? Make up your own mind.

This mud bath is the surface at Bloomfield Road, the home of the Championship's basement club Blackpool.

The winter months may be in their prime, but it appears that minimal work has gone into restoring the playing surface to an acceptable level for free-flowing football.

Blackpool hosted Nottingham Forest on Saturday in a crucial league encounter for both teams, as the hosts looked to bolster their survival chances, while Forest were hoping to move closer to the play-offs.

Reporters from Nottingham at the game tweeted: "The pitch is cutting up very badly at Bloomfield Road ahead of #Nffc v Blackpool."

Interestingly, it appears that Blackpool could have been using their pitch for first-team training sessions in late January, thus worsening the state of the playing surface.

Punters on Twitter have commented on the pitch, with some calling it a "farm" and others saying it is the "worst football pitch I've ever seen".

Blackpool have been in the press recently after owners Owen and Karl Oyston launched a legal case against the club's own fans for derogatory comments on a supporters' forum..
