Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson and the 1999 Treble: That night in Barcelona

On the 6th of November 1986, a successful Scottish manager moved south of the border and took the reins of Trafford-based side Manchester United.

Twenty-two years ago today, in 1986, Sir Alex Ferguson was officially unveiled as the new manager of Manchester United.

The Scot boasted a successful track record with former side Aberdeen having won three Scottish league titles and a UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

Ferguson's first major honour with an English side came in 1990 when he masterminded the first of five FA Cups he was to win with Manchester United.

League success did not arrive until 1993. During Ferguson's tenure though he has lifted an incredible ten league titles.

Champions League success arrived twice. Once in 1999, and then again last season.

Together with his major honours, Sir Alex can also boast two League Cup wins, eight FA Charity/ Community Shields, one Uefa Cup Winners Cup, one Uefa Super Cup, and one Intercontinental Cup.

In recognition of his contribution to British football while at Manchester United his Officer of the Order of the British Empire status was upgraded to a Commander of the British Empire.

He was finally knighted in 1999.
