Shorey Wants England Recall

New Aston Villa signing Nicky Shorey has identified a recall to the England squad as a target for the upcoming campaign.

The left-back finalised a three-year deal this week with Martin O’Neill’s UEFA Cup hopefuls after seven loyal seasons at Reading.

During his time at the Madjeski, Shorey broke into the England set-up, winning two caps in 2007 against Brazil and Germany under Steve McClaren.

However, last season represented a disappointing season for the Royals, as they slipped back into the Championship after two Premier League campaigns.

Shorey had been a key-component in Reading’s top-flight seasons, and his name was linked with an exit since Reading’s relegation was confirmed.

Last week, Aston Villa swooped for the defender, as they contemplated a dearth of personnel in his position. A £3.5million deal was agreed, and Shorey hopes that his move to Villa will lead to further international recognition, once he cements a place in his new club side.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "Obviously once you play for England you want to keep on playing for England. I've had a taste of it and I really enjoyed it.

"It would be good to get back there, but the first thing on my mind is trying to get into the Aston Villa team. I'll take it one step at a time.

"I think it's important for any club to have an English base and there are some quality English players and there are lots of good young English players here at Villa, so I'm sure I am in the right place to be noticed by Fabio Capello.

"Just coming to a club like this and playing with the players that are here, hopefully that will bring the best out of me."
