Netherlands Frustrated By Nigeria

Netherlands 0-0 Nigeria

Neither the European U-21 Champions nor the 'Dream Team IV' could muster a goal between them in Tianjin...

The two sides fought out a largely disappointing encounter that failed to live up to its early promise.

First Half

With an all-star attack of Babel and Makaay supported by the likes of Royston Drenthe, the Dutch had the best of it early on but couldn't capitalise on their possesion.

Nigeria tried to fight back through Victor Nsofor Obinna as the half drew to a close, but twice he spurned fine opportunities after battling through to a good position.

Overall chances were few and far between, and no team could correctly be called the dominant force.

Second Half

The second period started in similar fashion to the first as the Dutch enjoyed the jump on the Super Eagles to start with, but Roy Makaay's injury saw to it that there was all too little penetration in the final through.

Osaze Peter Odemwingie, however, had perhaps the best chance of the game against the run of play on the hour mark. The Lokomotiv Moscow ace only just failed to connect with a low cross from Olubayo Adefemi.

Promise Isaac of Nigeria almost managed to seal victory right at the death as the Super Eagles again battled hard as time ticked away, but Vermeer kept the scores level.

Netherlands: Vermeer - Zuiverloon, Jaliens, Jong-A-Pin, Marcellis - De Guzman, Emanuelson, Maduro, Drenthe - Makaay, Babel.

Nigeria: Vanzekin - Okonkwo, Apam, Adeleye, Adefemi - Isaac - Kaita, Okoronkwo, Odemwingie, Ajilore - Obinna.
