Riquelme talks up Messi
Juan Román Riquelme has criticised the Argentinian media for looking for problems between him and Lionel Messi that do not exist as the pair prepare for the Olympic games.
The former Barcelona playmaker has been accused of looking to eclipse the current Blaugrana ace and that the duo are not friends, but both players have denied there is any rift at all.
Now Riquelme has gone public in response to a round of articles in the Argentinian press that again questioned how well he and Messi would fair in China during their stay.
"They are looking to create problems," he told Argentinian television channel TyC Sport.
"They are commenting on things that are in the past. They are looking back and jumping to the same conclusions about whether we are happy or not.
"I would like to repeat that we are always happy when we are playing football."
Riquelme and Messi had a long chat earlier this week and that also caused rumours to spread that they were sorting out their differences, but in fact they were just catching up.
"We talked about the same things always talk about among the squad. We talked about our families and things with Barcelona and he asked me about Boca Juniors.
"Everything is fine. Lionel is happy and we are pleased to have him here and we will see if we can start with a win against Ivory Coast on Thursday."
Messi's late arrival did not cause any problems within the Argentinian camp as Riquelme believes that given the quality in the squad, not much training will be required.
"We all know each other," Riquelme continued. "With Lionel, Gago, Mascherano, Ustari, Agüero, myself, all together, were do not need much practice."
