The defender’s returned from the Olympics

Hamburg’s Belgian defender Vincent Kompany has returned to first team training with the Bundesliga club following his return from Beijing, but has hit out at the club’s attitude to his Olympic participation.

The centre back made it abundantly clear that he had returned against his wishes saying: "I have not got the energy and the strength to fight Hamburg on my own.

"I don't play for Brazil or Argentina but for a small footballing country. Our federation is frightened of HSV. "

Hamburg had insisted this week that the 22year old defender leave the Beijing Games following an agreement with the Belgian FA under which Kompany would be released after the first two matches.

Kompany had hoped to play for Belgium on Wednesday in their last group match against New Zealand after he missed the second game following his sending off against Brazil.

Belgium won the match 1-0 to advance to the quarter-finals. However Hamburg wanted Kompany back in time for Friday's Bundesliga start at Bayern Munich.

"I am an important player for Belgium but will probably be sitting on the substitutes' bench against Bayern" he complained.

"Hamburg have played almost 100 times against Bayern in almost 50 years in the Bundesliga. No one understands that for me it is interesting for me to reach the Olympic quarter-finals with my country."

Kompany added that he felt he was being ‘penalized’ for agreeing on a compromise before the Games. "Schalke and Werder also have important players, but Rafinha and Diego, who simply cleared off, are still playing at the Olympics" he said.

Hamburg trainer Martin Jol said he expected Kompany to put the disappointment behind him and give his all for the club.

"Vincent is an adult. He now has to show that he is a professional" Jol said.
