Keane is thrilled by Diouf

Sunderland manager Roy Keane has revealed his delight after completing the signing of El-Hadji Diouf from Bolton Wanderers…

Diouf’s future had been up in the air as, despite effectively announcing his departure from the Reebok at the end of last season, there appeared to be little to no interest in the Senegalese striker.

But the Black Cats took the opportunity to pounce upon the 27-year-old, who has joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

And Keane is ecstatic at having lured such an experienced performer to the Stadium of Light.

"El-Hadji is a great signing for us and we're thrilled to get him in," said the Irishman.

"He has bags of Premier League and international experience, which is exactly what we've been targeting this summer."

The signing will no doubt stir up mixed emotions on Wearside, as Diouf has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s least liked players since arriving to much fanfare at Liverpool in 2002.

But it is exactly that sort of thorny customer that Keane has been searching for, and the Sunderland boss hopes the former Lens man can his side an edge that was perhaps lacking previously.

"El-Hadji has always been the kind of player opposition teams and supporters love to hate, a thorn in the side, and that's why we're delighted to now have him in our squad," Keane continued.

"Our coach Ricky Sbragia has also worked very closely with him and speaks extremely highly of him, so we're looking forward to working with El-Hadji, I think he's a signing that will excite our supporters.
