Maradona demands more character from Messi

In what has turned out to be the biggest club vs country row in years, the one and only Diego Maradona has chimed in on the messy war between Argentina and Barcelona as they fight for the services of Lionel Messi.

Argentina’s Olympic team continue to wrangle with FC Barcelona to acquire the services of Lionel Messi for the summer Olympics in Beijing. While Sergio Batista has included the young prodigy in his final squad of 18, the Blaugrana are adamant that they will be able to hold on to their star player for the qualifying round of the Champions League.

As the debate continue to heat up, Maradona has now chimed in to give his two cents’ worth on the whole issue.

The former Barcelona and Napoli legend started off by saying that there should no discussion to begin with regarding Messi’s call up because the youngster’s presence in the Albiceleste squad is vital. But Maradona admitted that to get the permission of his club is a different matter altogether.

“It will be hard because the Catalans are stubborn and they are not going to yield easily,” El Pelusa said on Argentine television. “But they should think about how he has a chance of winning a medal for his country.”

Maradona will at least be glad that his son-in-law to be, Sergio Agüero of Atlético Madrid, will be present at the games in Beijing
