Beckhams Rock the ESPYs

David and Posh kill at the annual American sports awards show.

The ESPY Awards, ESPN's annual sports soiree, has long been where testosterone-drunk jocks meet designer-clad Hollywoodites. This year, though, the appearance of David and Victoria Beckham meant that the two sides came to the party together.

Wednesday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, the Beckhams were the hit of the party. They dominated the red carpet, and had front-row seats for the show, which was hosted by pop star Justin Timberlake. Although the show will not be broadcast until this Sunday, by most accounts, JT took particular relish in ribbing the Los Angeles Galaxy star.

"Dude, I got to give you props. Single-handedly you made soccer in America this much more popular," Timberlake reportedly said, holding his thumb and index finger an inch apart. "I call it soccer because in America we already have a game dudes play called football."

Becks ended up taking home the award for "Best MLS Player." He previously won an ESPY for "Best Male Soccer Player" in 2004.

But it wasn't the former England captain's play that caused the biggest stir at the Nokia Theatre on Wednesday. Just his presence -- and that of Posh -- was enough to excite some of the world's biggest sports stars.

"I'm just excited I got to meet David Beckham," basketball player Candace Parker said after being named female athlete of the year. Beckham presented her with the trophy. "I grew up playing soccer, so I love David Beckham. I was thinking, `Don't trip, don't trip.' He's truly an inspiration."
